  1. Copa America Betting: Argentina vulnerable as Costa Rica win
    ============
    Argentina's chances of Copa America glory suffered a blow on Thursday night without them even kicking a ball. Michael Lintorn explains why...

    A slow start to the Copa America for hosts Argentina, drawing 1-1 with Bolivia and 0-0 with Colombia, appeared to be no disaster. After all, their final Group A game would be against Costa Rica, the absolute outsiders who would no doubt enter the fixture with little chance of qualifying.

    Those plans for a comfortable victory on Monday to secure passage to the quarter-finals and inspire optimism from a fan base growing increasingly disgruntled by a lack of international success swiftly unravelled on Thursday though as Costa Rica celebrated a shock 2-0 triumph over Bolivia.

    That result means that they will head into their showdown with Argentina a point clear of the 2.48 tournament favourites, meaning that far from rolling over to give home supporters something to celebrate, they will be encouraged to play for the draw [7.2] that would send them through.

    Prior to Costa Rica's win, claimed courtesy of second-half goals from 21-year-old Josue Martinez and 19-year-old Joel Campbell, it looked like a draw would be enough for the Albiceleste because three points tends to be a big enough tally to at least earn a spot as one of the two best third-placed sides.

    However, there is now a scenario whereby three spoil-sharers and an unbeaten campaign could still see the 14-time champions dumped out in the group stage, as if they are held by Costa Rica and Bolivia defeat leaders Colombia the day before - a long shot at 6.2 - they will finish bottom.

    The group is so finely poised that they could land top spot by overcoming Costa Rica if frontrunners Colombia [1.34] have the same trouble that they did against Bolivia, but at 3.2 that sequence of events is also considered unlikely.

  2. Lionel Messi isn't to blame

    =====================
    BUENOS AIRES -- Lionel Messi can defend himself much better on the field with the ball at his feet. However, since several journalists and Argentine soccer fans have started attacking the best player in the world, we can't help but try and explain why Messi isn't to blame for Argentina's poor form at the Copa America.

    Argentina tied its first two games, against Bolivia and Colombia. It was in that second match that Argentina was a shadow of itself, displaying an intriguing level of inefficiency and lack of reaction. It was clearly outplayed by the Colombian side, and only a great performance by goalkeeper Sergio Romero kept Argentina from losing.

    After the game, the local fans expressed their disapproval with a loud chorus of catcalls and hoots of derision. One of the main recipients of that collective reprobation was Messi. People asked Messi to be their savior, the guy who can kick the corner shot and then run to the box and head it in. They are asking him to score the kind of goals Maradona did during his career. And the idea that he must become a one-man team came from the same media outlets that criticize him.

    The Monday-night-quarterbacks who boast their claim of never missing a Barcelona game appear to be outraged by watching Messi sink to such a low level with his national team. But they ask for the impossible, because the context is different, the teammates are different and the idea is different. No player can win a match by himself, and it hasn't been like that in soccer for at least the past 20 years.

    This Copa America was the ideal scenario for Messi to prove his naysayers wrong. A tournament played at home, before the eyes of his entire country, would serve the purpose of debunking the ridiculous theory that Messi can't play at the same level for his national team as he does for Barca.

    Sure, Messi doesn't play at the same level. But that's because a soccer player becomes great not only on personal talent, but also on the talent of those who surround him.

    At Barcelona, Messi is surrounded by players who feel soccer the same way he does. It's as if the players have a telepathic understanding between them. When Messi drops into the midfield to get the ball, the others all play their parts. Dani Alves shows up on one side, while Pedro also stands his ground a little further up the pitch. Andres Iniesta and Xavi are right by his side, David Villa waits ahead and Adriano makes himself visible on the other end of the field. Everyone is in constant motion, strategically filling into empty space. But when Messi is the one pushing forward to make the play, Xavi and Iniesta do whatever is necessary to put the ball at his feet.

    In short, the team is built around Messi, allowing him to shine.

    What happens when Messi puts on an Argentina shirt, then? For starters, the players on the wings don't move forward much, and if they do, they tend to mistime their runs. The midfielders have no mobility or precision, and the forwards fight and clash instead of creating enough chances. How can you expect Messi to deliver a Barca-like performance in this context? It's folly.

    And now comes Costa Rica on Monday night. It's an Olympic squad, so Argentina should bag all three points and secure passage into the Copa America's knockout rounds. But if Messi doesn't score, or if the unthinkable happens and Argentina bows out, the chorus of criticism will reach a fever pitch -- but unfairly so. More than likely, however, Messi will defend himself against his naysayers the only way he knows how, with the football at his feet.

  3. Costa Rica boss Ricardo La Volpe: I hope Argentina don't wake up in final group match
    =============================
    Ricardo La Volpe hopes Argentina "don't wake up" against his Costa Rica side ahead of their Copa America Group A clash in Cordoba on Monday evening.

    The Argentina-born coach accepted that his side need a poor performance from the hosts, who require at least a draw to stand a realistic chance of making it to the knockout stages.

    La Volpe said: "Argentina might not wake up. I hope that they don't wake up against us."

    He went on to predict that Argentina would be "more aggressive" against Costa Rica than in their previous games - two disappointing draws against Bolivia and Colombia.

    He also stated that there was a difference in the way Lionel Messi plays for Barcelona and the way he plays for his county, adding: "If you ask, I will tell you that the Messi of Barca is in a different system - [a different] form of play, a collective work."

    La Volpe also criticised the performance of Argentina in major tournaments over the last 20 years, saying "Since the 90s, nothing has happened. We must analyse this. For the last 16 years, we have had the best players, [and] champions of Europe - something is happening with the selection."
